Introducing James, one of our super #voypicvolunteers

Monday, 05 June 2017 09:42

It's #volunteersweek (1 - 7 June) so we thought we'd do a shout out to our Volunteer Information Assistant, James. Read more about why he got involved with us and writing two books!

Why VOYPIC?
I’m currently studying to obtain a Library and Information Management qualification at Ulster University so I’m learning lots of theory. I wanted to work in a specialist library to help balance all the academic stuff I’m learning with practice on the ground. My course tutor knew Claire, VOYPIC’s information officer, was looking for a volunteer so I decided to apply.

What has this opportunity given you?
I’ve worked in a public library and an academic library but haven’t worked in the charitable sector so it’s great to have the opportunity to do this while also gaining experience working in another type of library.  I started volunteering mid-March and come in one or two days a week. So far I’ve been involved in classifying and cataloguing resources, sourcing information for practitioners, showcasing resources, proof reading and developmental work.

I can’t believe I’ve had the chance to do all this but I guess that’s because I’m working with a solo librarian, one person running the show. I’m used to working with a team of librarians so it really is a juggling act in here but great for developing time and project management skills.

Is there anything you would like to change about the opportunity? I’d like to be able to volunteer more hours.

Interesting fact about James .... he’s published two books about one of his favourite subjects: horror films.
